Formative pruning
Formative pruning will improve the health and the structure of the tree. This involves the removal of branches that are dead and diseased, and branches that will cause problems in the future. It is much easier to remedy a problem while it is small than when it has grown larger.

Lifting the canopy
Lifting the canopy involves removing low limbs to increase clearance for buildings, walkways, driveways and view. A well lifted canopy will look natural and balanced and will not affect the health of the tree.

Thinning the canopy
Thinning the canopy involves the selective removal of interior branches to reduce the density of the canopy. This will allow better penetration of light and air through the tree.

Reducing weight
Overly large and very heavy limbs can develop a high likelihood of snapping. By removing smaller branches from large limbs the weight loading on the limb is reduced. A good weight reduction will make large, heavy limbs safer and leave them looking natural.

Reducing size
Often trees will get too large for the position they are in. For some trees it is possible to reduce the height and width while retaining a tree that is shapely, balanced and pleasing to the eye.
